Case Study: Data Centre Hampshire

For this project our client required a Multi Chiller chilled water piped system, which served a multi-unit CRAC (Computer Room Air Conditioning) located within a data centre. The system also incorporated a sophisticated control and alarm reporting system.

When Did This Project Start And When Was It Completed?

The project started in May 2014 and was completed in November 2014

What Problems Did The Client Have?

Bad weather had a major impact on the project pushing the base build programme back by 6 weeks.

What Actions Were Taken To Solve The Problem?

Regular programme meetings and coordination between all contractors saw the project completed on time to the original programme end date. This date was pretty much cast in stone as the client had equipment being delivered and required to be operational on set dates.

The installation consisted of a chilled water system serving the data centre which was engineered utilising materials that could be fabricated off site.

What Were The Results?

Closewood took the original design and working closely with the consultant and client managed to value engineer the project to enable the client to benefit from considerable savings, along with engineering on site risks out of the project.

From Closewood’s Perspective…

“This project was a real milestone project for Closewood as it was the first sizeable mechanical project secured by the business. Although there were elements of air conditioning and ventilation, the project mainly consisted of mechanical services. This project has been the catalyst for our mechanical division to really take off, resulting in growth and employment of additional engineers and support staff.”

From the Client’s side…

“We recently, successfully completed a new High Spec Data Centre complex project with Closewood for the international data transmission company, Arqiva which is located in the Winchester area of Hampshire.

Closewood were employed as the Mechanical Contractor on the project. The scheme comprised a Multi Chiller chilled water piped system serving multi-unit CRAC`s (Computer Room Air Conditioning) which were located within the data centre environment. The system incorporated a sophisticated control and alarm reporting system.

This project was demanding in both its complex technical requirements and compacted programme period. Closewood`s approach throughout the project which was both professional and effective.

Closewood ensured that the mechanical installation was developed rapidly into a fully workable and coordinated installation, whilst maintaining the high levels of quality as required by the client throughout the project.

The testing and commissioning of the mechanical systems was required to be of a high standard including full load testing, functionality proving of all the mechanical systems, including the controls and all interfaces throughout the scheme.

Working closely with the project’s technical consultants, Closewood`s team managed the process successfully ensuring that the project was completed on time and was fully operational for the clients use.

Looking to the future, we are currently using Closewood as a Mechanical contractor on many of our current projects and with their performance to date, intend to continue with our partnership with Closewood.
